Can innovation help the NHS in London through the economic downturn?

On Wednesday 22nd February 2012, the three London HIECs? held a collaborative symposium? where 119 delegates had the opportunity to hear the latest thinking on this issue from leading experts.
The keynote speakers were, Professor the Lord Ara Darzi, Christine Outram and Paul Corrigan. Their speeches were well received and generated many questions from the audience.? This was followed in the afternoon with a facilitated workshop around the HIECs? projects where delegates were invited to consider? and discuss the following two questions:

1. Which two projects do you think will improve the efficiency of the NHS in London the best?

2. What are the two best ways in which the NHS can ensure that these innovations are spread with speed across most of the NHS in London?

The three most identified projects that delegates thought would improve efficiency in the NHS in London were:

1. Asthma (My Asthma Log Android Application).

2. Telemonitoring.

3. COPD Self Management Plan (NHS Improvement ? Lung: National Improvement Projects Transforming acute care in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD): testing the case for change).

Self-compassion and self-esteem Conference.

?Low self-esteem is both a pre-disposing factor for mental health problems, and a consequence of them. Hence, many people with mental health problems experience the debilitating and distressing effects of low self-esteem. However, there are few evidence-based interventions available to guide the clinician in treatment. This 1-day conference will consider the state-of the-art conceptualisation and treatment of low?self-esteem, with a particular focus on recent developments in compassion-based approaches. This conference is being held on 16th April 2012 from 09:00-13:45 at the University of Reading.? Contact cwi@reading.ac.uk for further details.
