Three U.S. citizens killed in Mexico attacks (Reuters)

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) ? Three U.S. citizens were among those killed when gunmen attacked buses in the eastern Mexican state of Veracruz, said a U.S. State Department official said on Saturday.

The three were traveling for the holidays when they and several other passengers on the bus were killed by gunmen on Thursday, according to the U.S. official and local media.

The incident was one of several that day in which gunmen attacked busses in the eastern state, a major oil export hub that has lately become a flashpoint for drug gang violence.

On Friday, the tortured bodies of 10 people were found in northern Veracruz, local media reported, as attacks in the region intensify between the Zetas gang and Gulf drug cartels.

In September, 35 bodies were dumped along a downtown highway in the Veracruz city of Boca del Rio.

More than 45,000 people have been killed in cartel-related violence since President Felipe Calderon took office in December 2006.

Man held after Facebook post on girlfriend's death

Willie Davis Hines Jr.A San Bernardino County man accused in the beating death?of his pregnant girlfriend was arrested after a post appeared on his Facebook page implying that her death was an accident.

Willie Davis Hines Jr., 23,?was booked into the San Bernardino Central Detention Center on two counts of murder in connection with the death of Tatjana Cruz, 24, and her unborn child, the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department said Tuesday.

Hines was arrested after he flagged down a security guard at a mall in San Diego late Monday and told him he was wanted for questioning in a murder, the department said in a statement.

He was being held Tuesday without bail.

Hines allegedly beat Cruz after a dispute, authorities said. She was taken to a hospital, where doctors discovered that the unborn child she was carrying was dead, possibly because of the beating, authorities said. Cruz died at the hospital.?

Afterward, a post appeared on Hines' Facebook page acknowledging that he and Cruz had?had a dispute sparked by his revelation that they were no longer in a "monogamous relationship."

?The post apologized for Cruz's death and the death of the fetus.

"I know there is no way to believing anything I have to say but just know I am not armed nor am I dangerous," the post said. "I fled the scene, because I don't think there is any way to prove that this is not just a act of pure hate."

Authorities said they were investigating whether Hines or someone else wrote the post.

CNN's Piers Morgan rejects phone hacking claims (AP)

LONDON ? A tense and sometimes hostile Piers Morgan refused to disclose details Tuesday about the most damning link between himself and Britain's phone hacking scandal ? his acknowledgment that he once listened to a phone message left by Paul McCartney for his then-wife Heather Mills.

The CNN celebrity interviewer, testifying through a video link from the U.S., clashed repeatedly with the UK panel investigating media ethics, insisting he never took part in the illegal phone hacking that has led to the closure of a Sunday tabloid he once edited and the arrests of friends and former colleagues.

The stakes were high for Morgan. More than a dozen journalists have been arrested, senior executives with Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. media empire have lost their jobs, and top U.K. police officers have resigned over their failure to tackle the phone hacking scandal.

His testimony was given under oath, and Morgan could be subject to criminal proceedings if he is found to have violated any British laws.

Morgan's defense Tuesday was part denial, part apology and a healthy helping of "I don't recall."

A key line of questioning centered on the comments Morgan made in a 2006 article he wrote for the Daily Mail tabloid. In it, Morgan said he was played a phone message left by the former Beatle on Mills' answering machine, describing it in detail and noting that McCartney "even sang 'We Can Work It Out' into the answer phone.."

Mills, who went on to divorce McCartney, has charged there was no way Morgan could have obtained the message honestly ? an allegation that could prove embarrassing to CNN, which brought the 46-year-old journalist on board in January to replace Larry King.

Morgan stubbornly refused Tuesday to go into any detail about the message, saying: "I'm not going to discuss where I heard it or who played it to me."

Pressed by inquiry chief Lord Justice Brian Leveson about whether he could provide any evidence to substantiate that he had obtained the message legally, Morgan said he could not.

"I can't start any trail that leads to the identification of a source," he said.

Before his U.S. television career, Morgan ran two British tabloids ? Murdoch's now-shuttered News of the World, between 1994 and 1995, then the rival Daily Mirror, which is not connected to the Murdoch empire, where he stayed for nearly a decade.

Much of Tuesday's inquiry focused on the time Morgan spent at the latter, which could revive earlier suggestions that hacking was not confined to journalists working for News International, the British subsidiary of Rupert Murdochs global media giant, News Corp.

Although Morgan showed occasional flashes of humor, the atmosphere was mostly tense during Tuesday's questioning.

At one point Morgan said he "doesn't believe" he ever listened to hacked voicemail messages ? and rejected suggestions he had any contact with the private detectives accused of carrying out many of the tabloids' dirtiest deeds, saying his subordinates would have been charged with giving them assignments.

Morgan also dismissed earlier interviews about phone hacking in which said that "loads of newspaper journalists were doing it" or that he had trouble condemning the shady practices of private eyes "because obviously you were running the results of their work."

Morgan told the inquiry that those statements were based on nothing more than hearsay and the newspaper industry's "rumor mill."

He said he couldn't say who had filled him in on the rumors.

"My memory's not great about this. It was a long time ago," he said.

Occasionally ? when confronted by written excerpts from his autobiographical book, "The Insider" ? Morgan accepted that some of what he had done had crossed the line.

For example, Morgan acknowledged he had made use of Benji "the Binman" Pelham, a freelancer who specialized in raking though celebrities' trash to look for scoops.

"Did I think he was doing anything illegal? No. Did I think he was doing anything on the cusp of unethical? Yes," Morgan said.

Morgan was also quizzed about the cozy relationship between Murdoch and former Prime Minister Tony Blair ? a line of questioning which drew a heavy hint that the News Corp. executive chairman may himself testify before the inquiry.

At one point, inquiry lawyer Robert Jay told Morgan to stop speculating about what Murdoch might have remembered about a particular incident in which the two clashed.

"We can ask him for his recollection of events when we get there," Jay said.

A spokesman for the inquiry declined to elaborate, and News Corp. did not immediately return an email seeking confirmation. In July, Murdoch gave dramatic testimony before Parliament in which he denied any responsibility for phone hacking at his flagship Sunday tabloid, which he shut in the wake of the scandal.

Meanwhile, News Corp. announced settlements with seven more prominent figures victimized by the paper.

The company said in a statement Tuesday it had settled claims brought by Princess Diana's former lover James Hewitt, ex-Liberal Democrat lawmaker Mark Oaten, TV anchor Ukrika Jonsson, model Abi Titmuss and Paul Dadge, who helped rescue victims of the 2005 London transit bombings. Theatrical agent Michelle Milburn and Calum Best, the son of soccer legend George Best, rounded out the settlement list.

At least one more settlement ? with former England soccer player Paul Gascoigne ? appeared imminent, according to lawyer Jeremy Reed.

The terms of the new payments were not disclosed, but they are likely to be substantial. Sienna Miller received nearly $157,000 (100,000 pounds) when she settled with News International, while the family of a murdered British schoolgirl, Milly Dowler, was awarded $3.1 million (2 million pounds), plus an additional $1.6 million (1 million pounds) from Murdoch himself that was earmarked for charity.

Police say the number of potential phone hacking victims could be in the thousands.

CNN broadcast Morgan's appearance live ? but only on its international station.

(AP) ? Holiday travelers were breathing a sigh of relief Wednesday after a snowstorm that shuttered interstates across the Great Plains moved out of the region, allowing crews to plow away snow drifts and free stranded motorists from roadside hotels.

The storm was blamed for at least two fatal car accidents as it crawled from eastern New Mexico and Colorado through the Texas Panhandle, Oklahoma and Kansas. The fierce winds and heavy snowfall closed several major roadways before weakening Tuesday as the weather moved into Missouri and toward the Great Lakes.

Authorities still were reporting snow drifts of up to 10 feet high in southeast Colorado, and Texas officials warned drivers to stay off the road in the Panhandle so crews would have a clear path to remove ice and snow. Some highways in the western half of the Oklahoma Panhandle remained closed early Wednesday, with transportation officials warning of hazardous conditions.

At least 40 people were stranded the Longhorn Motel on Main Street in Boise City, Okla., where manager Pedro Segovia said blowing snow had created drifts 2- and 3-feet high and closed the main road.

"Some people cannot even get out of their houses. There is too much snow," Segovia said Tuesday. "It's was blowing. We've got big piles. It's real bad."

Receptionist MaKenzee Grove sympathized with the 50 or so people stranded at the hotel where she works in Guymon, about 60 miles east of Boise City. She too spent Monday night there.

"I have this rinky-dink car that does not do well in this," Grove said. "If we wouldn't have had the wind, it wouldn't have been as bad. The winds ... made the drifts really bad."

A few guests traveling to Oklahoma City managed to leave Tuesday, but others would likely have to wait another night before all roads were clear, she said.

Officials reopened Interstate 40 in the Texas Panhandle and New Mexico, and portions of Interstate 70 in western Kansas that had been closed Tuesday. New Mexico reopened a closed section of Interstate 25, the main route from Santa Fe to the Colorado line, after crews cleared drifts as high as 5 feet.

The storm dumped as much as 15 inches of snow as it hit parts of five states.

In Kansas, schools in Manhattan canceled classes Tuesday, anticipating several inches of snow. The National Weather Service reported later that 3 inches or less fell.

To the east, a cold rain pelted the Topeka area, turned into a mix of light sleet and snow without much accumulation and tapered off. Forecasters said the storm became less potent as it moved northeast toward the Great Lakes.

Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper Ben Gardner said the patrol dealt with dozens of accidents in which motorists slid off highways Tuesday morning.

"We had ice-covered roads, covered by snow packed on top," he said.

The late-autumn snowstorm lumbered into the region Monday, turning roads to ice and reducing visibility to zero. Many of the areas hit had enjoyed relatively balmy 60-degree temperatures just 24 hours earlier.

The storm was blamed for at least six deaths Monday, authorities said. Four people were killed when their vehicle collided with a pickup truck in part of eastern New Mexico where blizzard-like conditions are rare, and a prison guard and inmate died when a prison van crashed on an icy road in eastern Colorado.

The Colorado Army National Guard said it rescued two stranded motorists early Tuesday in eastern Las Animas County, in the state's southeast corner, using a special vehicle designed to move on snow. Smaller highways in that area remained closed.

Report card 2011: Sony bats for solid average (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? This is the third in TheWrap's series of Studio Report Cards.

SONY

Grade: B

Sony fielded a string moderately budgeted hits from the likes of Cameron Diaz and Adam Sandler, while launching a new family franchise with "The Smurfs." Not every gamble paid off, with moviegoers giving a cold shoulder to "Anonymous," but by and large the formula worked.

Sony left most of the major tentpole films to competitors such as Warner Bros. and Paramount, but what the studio did particularly well was hit for average.

From "Bad Teacher" to "Just Go With It," Sony peppered the box office with a profitable string of doubles and singles.

By and large, the formula worked, with Sony on pace to lap the $3 billion mark worldwide. It's only the third time that the studio has reached that pinnacle.

Sony is currently in third place behind Paramount and Warner Bros. in terms of domestic theatrical market share, with just over $1.2 billion in receipts to date.

"We didn't really have any sequels or established franchises, but we had some big wins and some really fresh pictures that exceeded our expectations," Jeff Blake, Sony's chairman of worldwide marketing and distribution, told TheWrap.

The year also saw the introduction of a new family franchise for the studio. Produced for $110 million, "The Smurfs" racked up $561 million worldwide, doing particularly well in foreign markets. A sequel is already in the works.

Made for a cost of just $20 million, the raunchy "Bad Teacher" cast Cameron Diaz as a money-grubbing, pot-smoking middle school teacher and rewarded the studio with a $216 million worldwide gross. Though slightly less successful, the sex and romance romp "Friends With Benefits" continued the string of low-cost hits, grossing $150 million worldwide on a $35 million budget.

Matthew Harrigan, an analyst at Wunderlich Securities, says making films for underserved audiences, such as older moviegoers or women, is central to Sony's approach.

"They are one of the studios that takes a very interesting approach on the counter-programming side," Harrigan said. "Obviously the big bright point in 2011 was 'The Smurfs' given the disproportionate international performance."

Picking up international rights to Steven Spielberg's "The Adventures of Tintin" is proving to be a coup for the studio. The adaptation of Herg?'s comic strips has racked up $233.7 million worldwide so far, even though it has yet to debut stateside.

Still on the docket and tracking strongly is "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," the adaptation of Stieg Larsson's bestselling novel, that Sony hopes will kick off a gritty R-rated franchise.

"We have very high commercial expectations for the film," Blake said. "The book series was a phenomenon, and we think we have found the perfect director in David Fincher. We think we've really got something here."

Blake thinks that with the film's Swedish setting, international markets will be as integral to the box-office performance as the domestic marketplace.

Among its more modest hits, superhero comedy "The Green Hornet" racked up $228 million on a $120 million budget and alien invasion flick "Battle: Los Angeles" grossed $215 million on a $70 million budget, making them profitable, but far from otherworldly.

Of course, not everything that Sony rolled out connected with audiences. Adam Sandler, who has become a fixture of the studio's slate, delivered a hit with the $215 million-grossing "Just Go With It." However, the critically derided "Jack & Jill" left moviegoers cold. With an $80 million budget, the film has so far eked out $83.6 million worldwide -- a rare whiff for Sandler.

Not even Roland Emmerich could entice audiences into "Anonymous," a historical drama about the authorship of William Shakespeare's plays. The $30 million film landed with a thud, grossing just $14.2 million worldwide.

Although its domestic performance has been disappointing, Sony is hopeful that "Arthur Christmas," produced Aardman Animations, will catch fire with younger moviegoers abroad as it continues its international rollout. The animated film has grossed $91.6 million worldwide, and has performed particularly well with United Kingdom audiences.

All of this may just be a palate cleanser for 2012, when Sony rolls one of its most potent lineups in years. The studio is rebooting its wall-crawler franchise with "The Amazing Spider-Man," returning to its alien comedy series with "Men in Black III," and bringing back James Bond for "Skyfall."

It also has a new "Ghost Rider" film, a reboot of "Total Recall" and fresh installments in its "Underworld" and "Resident Evil" franchises on tap.

"We've got our biggest franchise on display," Blake said. "As happy as we are to go over $3 billion worldwide, I think we've got the ingredients to go well beyond that next year.

Thousands abused in Dutch Catholic institutions (AP)

THE HAGUE, Netherlands ? Thousands of children suffered sexual abuse in Dutch Catholic institutions over the past 65 years, and church officials knew about the abuse but failed to adequately address it or help the victims, according to a long-awaited investigation released Friday.

Archbishop of Utrecht Wim Eijk apologized to victims on behalf of the entire Dutch Catholic organization and said the report "fills us with shame and sorrow."

The report said Catholic officials failed to tackle the widespread abuse, which ranged from "unwanted sexual advances" to serious sex abuse, in an attempt to prevent scandals. Abusers included priests, brothers, pastors and lay people who worked in religious orders and congregations, it said.

The investigation followed allegations of repeated incidents of abuse at one cloister that quickly spread to claims from Catholic institutions across the country, echoing similar church-related scandals around the world.

The suspected number of abuse victims who spent some of their youth in church institutions likely lies somewhere between 10,000 and 20,000, according to a summary of the report investigating allegations of abuse dating back to 1945.

The commission behind the report received some 1,800 complaints of abuse at Catholic schools, seminaries and orphanages and said that the institutions suffered from "a failure of oversight." It then conducted the broader survey of the general population for a more comprehensive analysis of the scale and nature of sexual abuse of minors ? both in the church and elsewhere.

Based on a survey among more than 34,000 people, the commission estimated that one in 10 Dutch children suffered some form of abuse broadly in society. The number doubled to 20 percent of children who spent part of their youth in an institution like an orphanage or boarding school ? whether Catholic or not.

The commission was set up last year under the leadership of former government minister Wim Deetman, who said there could be no doubt church leaders knew of the problem.

"The idea that people did not know there was a risk ... is untenable," he said.

Deetman said abuse continued in part because the Catholic church in the Netherlands was splintered, so bishops and religious orders sometimes worked autonomously to deal with abuse and "did not hang out their dirty laundry."

However, he said the commission concluded that "it is wrong to talk of a culture of silence" by the church as a whole.

Bert Smeets, an abuse victim who attended the presentation of the report, said it did not go far enough in investigating and outlining in precise detail exactly what happened.

"What was happening was sexual abuse, violence, spiritual terror, and that should have been investigated," Smeets told The Associated Press. "It remains vague. All sorts of things happened, but nobody knows exactly what or by whom. This way they avoid responsibility."

Archbishop Eijk said victims would be compensated by a commission the Dutch church set up last month and which has a scale starting at euro5,000 ($6,500) and rising to a maximum of euro100,000 ($130,000) depending on the nature of the abuse.

He said he felt personally ashamed of the abuse. "It is terrible," he said.

The Dutch Conference of Religious Orders also apologized, calling the abuse "a dark chapter in the history of religious life."

"We want to apologize for these mistakes and we want to never make them again," the conference said in an open letter to all victims.

The commission said about 800 priests, brothers, pastors or lay people working for the church were named in the complaints. About 105 of them were still alive, although it was not known if they remained in church positions, the report said. It did not release their names and identified them as "perpetrators" rather than "offenders," meaning they had not been proven to have committed a crime.

Prosecutors said in a statement that Deetman's inquiry had referred 11 cases ? without naming the alleged perpetrators ? to them.

Prosecutors opened only one investigation based on those reports, saying the other 10 did not contain enough detailed information and adding that they also appeared to have happened too long ago to prosecute. Had the case files contained enough information to trigger an investigation, prosecutors could have asked for the identities of the suspected abusers.

Deetman said the inquiry could not establish a "scientific link" between priests' celibacy and abuse, but he added, "we don't consider it impossible ... maybe if there was voluntary celibacy a number of problems would not have happened."

According to the Dutch Central Bureau for Statistics, 29 percent of the Dutch population of 16 million identified themselves as Catholics in 2008, making it the largest religion in the country.

Snag This Glowing Apple iPhone 4 Mod Before Apple?s Lawyers Do!

glowing-appleSet the rear-facing Apple logo aglow with this simple mod. Per the video demo below, it only takes 5 minutes to install and seems relatively simple. Just pop off the back cover of the iPhone, remove 5 internal screws, disconnect the screen's cable and install the mod. From there, you're a hop, skip and jump from having a glowing Apple logo every time the iPhone's screen kicks on or displays a notification. But there's a catch. The retailer knows it won't be able to sell this thing forever. Apple will no doubt release its legal hounds as soon as it catches wind of the unofficial mod. K.O Store is currently selling the kit for $42, but only for a limited time. Per a countdown timer on the website, the kit will go into hiding in just over two days from now unless of course Apple gets to it first. So? Do you want it or not?

New Zealand PM secures support he needs to govern (AP)

WELLINGTON, New Zealand ? New Zealand Prime Minister John Key has secured the votes he needs to govern for a second term after announcing deals with two minor parties.

The deals became necessary after a general election on Nov. 26 left Key's governing National Party just short of an outright majority, with 60 of Parliament's 121 seats.

Key announced deals Monday with the Act and the United Future parties, each of which has a single lawmaker in Parliament. In exchange for support on key votes, each of the minor party lawmakers will get a ministerial role in Key's new government.

The deals were anticipated, since Key has struck similar deals with the two parties before.

Key, meanwhile, is continuing to negotiate a less-binding agreement with the three Maori party lawmakers.

Clinton challenges Myanmar to expand reforms (AP)

YANGON, Myanmar ? U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton on Thursday shared dinner with Myanmar's most famous former political prisoner and challenged the nation's leaders to expand upon recent reforms, end violent campaigns against ethnic minorities and break military ties with North Korea.

"We believe that any political prisoner anywhere should be released," Clinton told reporters during the first visit to this long-isolated nation by the top U.S. diplomat in more than 50 years. "One political prisoner is one too many in our view."

Clinton made her comments before her private dinner with opposition leader and Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, who was released last year after two decades of on-and-off imprisonment and has said she will run in upcoming elections. Clinton and Suu Kyi were to meet more formally on Friday.

Meeting earlier Thursday with President Thein Sein and other senior government officials in the capital of Naypyidaw, Clinton offered a small package of rewards for steps the country has already taken but made clear that more must be done. She said the U.S. was not ready to lift sanctions on the country.

Clinton hand-delivered letters from President Barack Obama to Thein Sein and Suu Kyi in which Obama expressed hope that relations could further improve.

"I came to assess whether the time is right for a new chapter in our shared history," Clinton said, adding that the U.S. was ready to further improve relations with the civilian government in the Southeast Asian nation ? also known as Burma ? but only if it stays on the path of democratization.

In a series of modest first steps, she announced that Washington would allow Myanmar's participation in a U.S.-backed grouping of Mekong River countries; no longer block enhanced cooperation between the country and the International Monetary Fund; and support intensified U.N. health, microfinance and counternarcotics programs.

A senior U.S. official said Thein Sein had outlined his government's plans for reform in a 45-minute presentation in which he acknowledged that Myanmar lacked a recent tradition of democracy and openness. He asked for U.S. help in making the transition from military to full civilian rule, according to the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to describe the private diplomatic exchange.

Clinton replied that she was visiting because the U.S. was "encouraged by the steps that you and your government have taken to provide for your people."

Yet, she also made clear that those steps must be consolidated and enlarged if the U.S. is to consider easing near-blanket economic sanctions that block almost all American commercial transactions with Myanmar. "While measures already taken may be unprecedented and certainly welcome, they are just a beginning," she told reporters.

"We're not at the point yet where we can consider lifting sanctions that we have in place because of our ongoing concerns about policies that have to be reversed," Clinton said. "But any steps that the government takes will be carefully considered and will be matched."

She called for the release of political prisoners and an end to brutal ethnic violence that has ravaged the nation for decades. She also warned the country's leadership to break suspected illicit military, nuclear and ballistic missile cooperation with North Korea that may violate U.N. sanctions. "Better relations with the United States will only be possible if the entire government respects the international consensus against the spread of nuclear weapons ... and we support the government's stated intention to sever military ties with North Korea," she said.

In his presentation, Thein Sein vowed that Myanmar would uphold its U.N. obligations with respect to North Korea, according to the senior U.S. official. He also told Clinton that Myanmar was actively considering signing a new agreement with the U.N. nuclear watchdog that would allow unfettered inspections of atomic sites in the country, the official said.

Nyan Win, a spokesman for Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy party, welcomed the U.S. package of rewards and said, "The incentives will help promote better relations and a better future for the country and I hope the government will expand its reform process."

Clinton rejected the idea that the U.S. outreach to Myanmar was partially motivated by the growing influence of China. "We are not viewing this in light of any competition with China," she said. "We are viewing it as an opportunity for us to re-engage here."

"We welcome positive constructive relations between China and her neighbors. We think that is in China's interest as well as in the neighborhood's interest," she said.

Recalling Obama's mention of "flickers of progress" in Myanmar when he announced that Clinton would visit the country, Clinton urged the leadership not to allow them to "be stamped out."

"It will be up to the leaders and the people to fan flickers of progress into flames of freedom that light the path toward a better future," she said. "That ? and nothing less ? is what it will take for us to turn a solitary visit into a lasting partnership."

Before dinner with Suu Kyi, Clinton toured the Shwedagon Pagoda, a 2,500-year-old Buddhist temple with a massive golden stupa.

Despite the historic nature of Clinton's visit, enthusiasm has been muted within Myanmar.

Chan Tun, a 91-year-old veteran politician and a retired ambassador to China, said: "This is a very critical visit because U.S. will understand Myanmar better through engagement. U.S. engagement will also help Myanmar's dependence on China."

But Clinton's presence has been overshadowed by the arrival Thursday of the prime minister of Belarus and his wife, to whom two large welcoming signs were erected at the airport and the road into the city. No such displays welcomed Clinton.

The Belarus Prime Minister made the front page of Thursday's edition of the government-run New Light of Myanmar newspaper. Clinton's visit was mentioned in a two-paragraph story on page 2.

Still, some in Myanmar welcomed the attention from the U.S. "I watched the arrival of Ms. Clinton on Myanmar TV last night," 35-year-old taxi driver Thein Zaw said. "I am very happy that Ms. Clinton is visiting our country because America knows our small country, whether it is good or bad."

Earthquakes: Water as a lubricant

ScienceDaily (Nov. 30, 2011) ? Geophysicists from Potsdam have established a mode of action that can explain the irregular distribution of strong earthquakes at the San Andreas Fault in California. As the science magazine "Nature" reports in its latest issue, the scientists examined the electrical conductivity of the rocks at great depths, which is closely related to the water content within the rocks. From the pattern of electrical conductivity and seismic activity they were able to deduce that rock water acts as a lubricant.

Los Angeles moves toward San Francisco at a pace of about six centimeters per year, because the Pacific plate with Los Angeles is moving northward, parallel to the North American plate which hosts San Francisco. But this is only the average value. In some areas, movement along the fault is almost continuous, while other segments are locked until they shift abruptly several meters against each other releasing energy in strong earthquakes. After the San Francisco earthquake of 1906, the plates had moved by six meters.

The San Andreas Fault acts like a seam of the Earth, ranging through the entire crust and reaching into the mantle. Geophysicists from the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences have succeeded in imaging this interface to great depths and to establish a connection between processes at depth and events at surface. "When examining the image of the electrical conductivity, it becomes clear that rock water from depths of the upper mantle, i.e. between 20 to 40 km, can penetrate the shallow areas of the creeping section of the fault, while these fluids are detained in other areas beneath an impermeable layer," says Dr. Oliver Ritter of the GFZ. "A sliding of the plates is supported, where fluids can rise."

These results suggest that significant differences exist in the mechanical and material properties along the fault at depth. The so-called tremor signals, for instance, appear to be linked to areas underneath the San Andreas Fault, where fluids are trapped. Tremors are low-frequency vibrations that are not associated with rupture processes as they are typical of normal earthquakes. These observations support the idea that fluids play an important role in the onset of earthquakes.
