Park goes 74-78, ends bid for 4 straight majors

(AP) ? Inbee Park's bid for a Grand Slam ended long before she walked up to the 18th green at St. Andrews, giving her plenty of time to find perspective.

"I've done something amazing this season," she said. "I won three straight majors. I don't know if I can do that again."

Winning four straight professional majors in one season remains out of reach. Park had a better chance than anyone, though it ended early Sunday at the Women's British Open when she went the wrong direction to finish her third round nine shots behind, and then four-putted for double bogey on the first hole of the final round.

The slam was gone. So was her energy.

"When you're so far behind, it's hard to get the motivation," she said. "I tried to push myself to play as good as I can."

Park closed with rounds of 74-78, more than a dozen shots out of the lead. She felt more relief than sadness when it was over. The Grand Slam ? even the debate whether it had to be four majors or all five on the LPGA Tour schedule this year ? had consumed the 25-year-old South Korean since she won the U.S. Women's Open in June for her third straight major of the year.

"I'm glad this tournament is over," said Park, who finished at 6-over 294. "I've gone through four rounds under pressure, and that's something I've never experienced."

The prospect of the first pro golfer winning four straight majors in the same year seemed even more possible when Park opened this championship with six birdies in 10 holes to take the lead. If she looks back at where it all went wrong, it would start with a poor tee shot on the 12th hole Thursday.

Park began to struggle with her swing, which caused her to lose concentration on the massive, double greens of the Old Course. She had to settle for a 69, the only time she broke par all week. She was eight shots behind going into the weekend and never made up ground.

Known for having one of the purest putting strokes in women's golf ? even the great Mickey Wright called Park one of the best putters she had ever seen ? it was putting that caused her the most problems. And it didn't help that greens were extra slow Sunday morning. Officials chose not to cut them out of concern of high wind that suspended the third round Saturday. Instead, they raised the blades on the mowers so they would only clean the dew from the ground.

"These greens were tough to judge," Park said. "One minute they were quick, one minute they were slow."

But it was far from a bad experience.

Her most memorable part of an otherwise drab week was feeling support for her quest in the weeks leading up to the Women's British Open, and from the gallery following her along at the home of golf.

"I've never had this many people rooting for me, wanting me to play good," she said.

Since the modern version of the Grand Slam began in 1960 ? Bobby Jones won two professional and two amateur majors in 1930 ? Park was the only player to win the first three majors of a season. The only other pro to do that was Babe Zaharias in 1950, when the LPGA Tour had only three majors.

Ben Hogan won three majors in 1953, though the British Open at Carnoustie was held one week after the PGA Championship. Hogan couldn't play the PGA Championship, physically because of his battered legs and logistically because Open qualifying was the same week as the PGA.

Tiger Woods won the final three majors of 2000 after tying for fifth in the Masters.

Woods, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Annika Sorenstam each got halfway to the Grand Slam and couldn't get the third leg.

"Unless I win four majors, this is something I'll always remember," Park said.

Woods and Wright are the only players to win four straight professional majors, both doing it over parts of two seasons. Park still has a chance to become the first pro to win four majors in a year. The LPGA's fifth major is the Evian Championship in September. Park is the defending champion, though she doesn't expect to face nearly as much public scrutiny when she gets to France.

She said she felt "exhausted" and was on her way home to rest in South Korea.

But she found one more aspect about this week at St. Andrews that made her smile.

"I get to do an interview after shooting 6-over," she said. "Everything at this tournament is new to me."

Windows 8 CPU Feature Patch (Bypass Windows 8 CPU feature checks)

Windows 8 CPU Feature Patch (Bypass Windows 8 CPU feature checks)

W8CPUFeaturePatch can be used to bypass the checks for the availability of the following CPU features in Windows 8: PAE, NX, SSE2, CMPXCHG16B.

Which patches do I need?

  • Click Remove PAE check if your CPU doesn't support PAE
  • If your CPU doesn't support SSE2, NX or both (missing PAE support implies missing NX support) click Remove SSE2 and NX check
  • To enable support for more than one logical CPU core after patching NX, click Fix hyper-threading in hal.dll and Fix hyper-threading in halmacpi.dll
  • If you want to get rid of the digital signature warning on boot after applying one of the patches above, click Remove winload patchguard x86
  • Click Remove various CPU feature checks in Windows 8.1 x64 if you want to skip some CPU feature checks (like CMPXCHG16B support) in Windows 8.1 x64
  • Click Remove winload patchguard of Windows 8.1 x64 to skip the digital signature warning that appears on boot after applying the Windows 8.1 x64 check.

How to apply the patches?
Create an ISO image by following FaiKee's guide or apply the patches from Windows PE.
W8CPUFeaturePatch.exe and W8CPUFeaturePatch x64.exe do the same things. The only difference is that W8CPUFeaturePatch x64.exe is compiled for x64. Use it if you want to patch from Windows PE x64 since you can't run 32 bit applications on Windows PE x64.

Notes:

  • The patch does not make Windows 8 compatible to your CPU since it only bypasses the compatibility checks. This means that if Windows 8 tries to use one of the features, your computer will probably crash. For example, if you applied the CMPXCHG16B patch, a 0x0000001E (KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED) BSOD with error code 0xFFFFFFFFC000001D (STATUS_ILLEGAL_INSTRUCTION) could occur if a CMPXCHG16B instruction is attempted to be executed.
  • The tool cannot predict how the feature checks will be implemented in future file versions of the files to be patched, which means that there is a risk that future file versions cannot be patched
  • For the reasons above, don't use these patches on your main OS!
  • If Windows is stuck at the spinning dots on boot, you have to disable hyper-threading or to patch hal.dll and halmacpi.dll
  • You have to run bcdedit /set {default} NoIntegrityChecks Yes if you patched winload.exe

Plants Communicate Using Fungi

[unable to retrieve full-text content]Shipud writes "In response to aphid attacks, some plants produce chemicals that repel the aphids and attract wasps, the aphids' natural enemies. Researchers at the University of Aberdeen have shown that plants attacked by aphids can communicate that information to neighboring plants via existing networks of fungi in the soil. Thus fungal symbiosis with plants is shown to be taken one step further: not only do they provide nutrients to plants, they also function as communication hardware."

How I Aided and Abetted My Own Debit Card Fraud

Using an ATM at night. Who's behind you?

?Hello, Mr. Welch. Visa Card Services here.? That was how my nightmare started one Sunday morning. I was hungover, sitting on the sofa, when the landline rang. I was surprised because I?d only given the number to about three people. The person on the other end of the phone, Mark, told me there had been a number of fraudulent transactions on my bank account since midnight, adding up to about 1,100 pounds ($1,663). I?d never heard of Visa Card Services before, but then, I?d never had money stolen like this before. Maybe this is what happens?

Mark then confirmed the last genuine withdrawal I?d made, at the Barclays bank opposite Highbury & Islington station in London. He gave me a reference number and told me to ring the telephone number on the back of my card. I did just that, quoted the reference number, and was able to speak with someone who knew all about the supposed fraud. These cunning tricksters had apparently cloned my card at the Barclay?s ATM, then treated themselves to a few things in the Apple Store. Something didn?t ring true about the whole thing?why would someone with a stolen card only spend 400 pounds (about $600) in the Apple Store, for starters? Still, I watch enough alarmist consumer-affairs TV,?the kind of program presented in the U.K. by an estuary gargoyle named Dominic Littlewood?to know that these things happen.

The person now helping me, Rajesh Khan in HSBC?s card protection department, had all my details: full name, date of birth, and crucially, my address. When he said a courier was on the way to collect my card for further examination, I didn?t need to tell him where I lived. I initially flinched at the idea, but when Rajesh explained that the bank?s fraud team needed to analyze the chip, it made sense. After all, I?d phoned the bank myself?this was no cold call, and he had all my details already. That?s probably also why I typed my PIN number into my telephone keypad of my phone when Rajesh asked me to.

?It?s OK, Mr. Welch, we can?t see it, but we need to perform a PIN block,? he said.

?I?ve never heard of that,? I said, ?but fair enough.?

I packaged the card up as requested?wrapped it snugly in a paper towel and tucked into an envelope?and waited for the courier to arrive. Rajesh called back twice, once to say the car was five minutes away, and again to say it was outside, quoting the car?s number plate and describing the driver. My new mate, Rajesh, called again later that afternoon to say they?d received the card and that I?d have my money back in a few days. ?Great," I thought. I recall saying to one of my housemates how difficult it was to like banks, what with them ruining the world and everything, but you couldn?t argue with efficiency like this.

The following day was similarly efficient, as I went through exactly the same process with my credit card. The fraudsters had somehow hacked into my online account, got my credit card details, and maxed it out. This time, good old Rajesh told me, there was a shred of hope the criminals would be arrested as they?d made the mistake of buying Eurostar tickets to Paris on a specific train. The police would be waiting for them at the Eurostar hub at St. Pancras station. Amazing news!

But then a few days went by without a call from Rajesh. By this point I was about 4,000 pounds (more than $6,000) out of pocket. I called the bank, this time from my mobile. After explaining the situation to two or three representatives, the nightmare stepped up a notch when one of them said, ?But Mr. Welch, your cards haven?t been reported stolen."

I?ve never been speechless before; I?ve never been able to feel the color drain from my face either, but now I was and I could. It ran from me like water down an open drain. I was consumed by feelings of stupidity, anger, and fear. Realizations kept hitting me as I relayed the conversations to the bank reps, over and over and over. Why had I given my card to a stranger? Why had I typed my PIN into the phone? How did they know my mother?s maiden name? How did they have my address? And most of all, why in the name of all things holy hadn?t I checked my balance to see for myself what the damage was before I even called the bank that Sunday morning?

Well, to answer the last question first, I suppose I didn?t want to see what was happening. When I did check, things were far worse than I?d expected, and my rent had bounced to cap it all off nicely. The Apple Store story was a lie?they?d in fact spent thousands in clothes shops, and better yet, they?d treated themselves to a Dixie Fried Chicken each evening. Forget the fraud?what kind of savage spends 95 pounds in three days on greasy take-out?

The rest of it comes down to good faith. Once you call the number on the back of a card and go through security stages, you enter into a world of trust, where you?re no longer the boss. The person on the other end of the line takes over. ?My National Insurance number? Sure, stranger I?ve never spoken to before, here you go ??

By now, I was really panicking. Most of the money was credit or overdraft. What if I didn?t get a refund? That was a possibility, according to the security expert at the bank. It would take me years to pay off debt like this.

I called the police, and after explaining my idiocy once again?it?s pretty humbling, repeatedly admitting you?re the type of person who gives both your debit card and PIN to the first person who asks for them?they outlined the likely series of events that led to this theft. (They also told me, to my relief, that banks almost always refund the first-time defrauded.) It all started, said the police, on the Saturday night when one of this gang would have watched me withdraw money from the ATM. The thought of being spied on while you?re trying to enjoy yourself at a garage night at the Buffalo Bar is sinister enough, but not the worst of it. The police believe that then I was followed home, which is how they got my address. It could have been worse?they could?ve just stabbed me, so every cloud and all that, but followed me home? Christ.

As for the Sunday morning phone call, well, credit where it?s due?it?s pretty clever. If you call a landline, it?s up to you to end the call. If the person who receives the call puts down the receiver, it doesn?t hang up the call. So after I went to find my debit card, the fraudster was still on the other end of the phone, waiting for me to pick up and call ?the bank.? As I did this, the police said, he first played a dial tone down the line, then a ring tone, making me think it was a normal call. ??Mark? would have been sitting next to ?Rajesh,? no doubt barely holding in their laughter at how stupid I was. Well, Mark and Rajesh, I hope you?re happy with your lives. To Hades with you.

I was right to praise the bank?s efficiency, though. They returned all my money to me within 10 days, although I did have to get new bank accounts and cards. It was a pretty lean spell, and by the time I got my money back, I?d spent my last 60 pence on a tin of beans. The feeling of total financial ruin, of utter helplessness, isn?t one I?ll forget in a hurry. If I momentarily forgot what was happening, I?d start panicking all over again the second I remembered. Setting up all new direct debits was an unholy pain in the arse, my credit rating has taken a serious knock, and getting the various bank departments to talk to one another and not charge me hundreds in overdraft charges was no picnic either. I?ve since had to sign up to a number of other bank schemes and government services to add further layers of protection. I get a monthly statement of credit checks in my name, for example, so I know if these people are using the information they have on me again. It took a few weeks to stop worrying about the same people coming back to my house, too, although it helped to spend hours online researching the link between bank fraud and violent crime?virtually nonexistent, it would seem. If I?m wrong about that, I don?t want to know.

Bank fraud is a bigger problem than I had ever realized before this happened. A 2012 study of thousands of consumers across 17 countries revealed that 1 in 4 has been directly affected by card fraud in the last five years. Millions and millions of pounds are pumped into funding departments and insurance coverage. That?s our money, paid in extortionate overdraft arrangement fees that finance the whole industry. Financial fraud is often thought of as a victimless crime, because ultimately it?s only huge companies footing the bill, not individuals. But having suffered through it myself, the stress, upset, and countless hours spent sorting it out tell me it?s anything but.

Out of everything, accepting that the fraud had happened probably took the longest to process. Being paranoid, well, hopefully that?ll just wear off in time; being a bit more suspicious than I was before isn?t a bad thing. I like to think I?m a tech-savvy person, I read about internet security, I know about phishing, but the knowledge left me when it counted and I handed over all my money to criminals like some yokel buying magic beans at a county fair. I?m surprised I didn?t offer to help them spend the cash as well.

Glendora Catholic school dismisses gay Rancho Cucamonga teacher after publicized wedding

Christopher Persky, 32, left, and his partner of 10 years Ken Bencomo, 45, both of Rancho Cucamonga, tearfully embrace after getting married at the San Bernardino County Hall of Records in San Bernardino on Monday, July 1, 2013. (Rachel Luna / Staff Photographer)

A Rancho Cucamonga man who taught 17 years at a Catholic high school was fired from his job days after he married his gay partner in a San Bernardino civil ceremony.

While school representatives declined comment on the matter, an attorney representing 45-year-old Ken Bencomo says he was fired because of the same-sex ceremony.

"The reason given was that the marriage occurred and the school's position was that it violated church teachings," said Chatsworth attorney Patrick McGarrigle.

Bencomo, 45, was head of the English department at St. Lucy's Priory High School in Glendora, but also worked as a yearbook moderator and dance coach.

Students say they were aware of Bencomo's sexual orientation.

"He never talked

Ken Bencomo, right, was fired from his job as a Catholic school teacher shortly after his same-sex wedding in San Bernardino. (By Rachel Luna)

about his personal life to his students, but it's something that students and faculty knew," said former student, Abigail O'Brien, 19, of Upland.

McGarrigle also said the school was aware long before he got married.

"St. Lucy's has known of Mr. Bencomo's orientation for years," she said. "Administrators had been introduced to his partner in the past, so the suggestion that Ken's orientation is a surprise or that his lifestyle somehow violated doctrine is at odds with the school's knowledge and what seemed to be acceptance of him until most recently."

In an online petition protesting Bencomo's termination, supporters of the former teacher say a July 2 article in the Daily Bulletin prompted the school to dismiss him. Bencomo

and his husband, Christopher Persky, 32, of Rancho Cucamonga were one of the first gay couples to line up at the San Bernardino County Assessor-Recorder's Office to get married July 1 following a Supreme Court decision allowing same-sex marriage.

He appeared in photographs and video for the story.

Sister Helen Dziuk, assistant principal at St. Lucy's, declined comment and referred inquiries to the school's attorney, Joseph Stark.

St. Lucy's officials later issued a written statement, saying the school plans to continue educating students "in the tradition of the Catholic faith."

"As a Benedictine school, St. Lucy's is a community for those who wish to express Christian values in education and develop person and academic excellence," the statement said.

Stark said an attorney representing Bencomo contacted the school on Sunday, but declined to elaborate.

"I have yet to see what his allegations are, so I can't comment," he said.

While about 2,000 people had signed the petition by Wednesday and more than 1,300 had joined a Facebook discussion group about Bencomo, not everyone felt the school's decision was wrong.

James Wellman, a former board and executive committee member for the school, said he thought Bencomo might still be teaching at St. Lucy's had he not appeared in the newspaper.

"We should not forget that Ken has been teaching at a Catholic high school. Anyone who believes that St. Lucy's operates in a totally independent fashion from the Catholic Church is gravely mistaken," he said.

The Diocese of San Bernardino said its Catholic schools prohibit discrimination against teachers or other school employees based on their lifestyle choices.

"However, if a teacher or school employee makes a public display of behavior that is counter to church teaching - such as homosexuality, sex outside of marriage, having a child outside of marriage - that can impact their employment status," said John Andrews, diocese spokesman.

School policies outlined by the Archdiocese of Los Angeles say a staff member can be counseled or disciplined if he or she engages in "behavior counter to the moral teachings and standards of the church."

Former St. Lucy's student, Brittany Littleton, said policies regarding staff at Catholic schools need to change.

"I am joined by many students and alumni in saying that we believe this is a fight for love and equality, and as such we wish to display love and kindness, even while feeling hurt and shock," the Beverly Hills woman said.

McGarrigle said Bencomo is hoping to resolve issues with the school without pursuing legal action.

Beware the Obamacare cliff! Working more could ultimately mean thousands of dollars less for you under a quirk in the new health-care law going into effect this fall. This could prompt some people to cut back on their hours to avoid losing money.

Be careful you don't fall off the Obamacare "cliff" when the boss asks you to put in some overtime.

Working more could ultimately mean thousands of dollars less for you under a quirk in the new health-care law going into effect this fall. This could prompt some people to cut back on their hours to avoid losing money.

"Working more can actually leave you worse off," the price-comparison site ValuePenguin.com notes in a new analysis.

"It's sort of an absurd scenario," said Jonathan Wu, ValuePenguin.com's co-founder. "It's something for people to be aware of."

In that scenario, an individual or family whose annual income surpasses maximums set by the federal government?if only by $1?will totally lose subsidies available to buy health insurance under the Affordable Care Act.

(Read more: Obamacare fraud?)

The loss of those subsidies in some cases will mean that people potentially would have been better off financially if they had worked less during the year, Wu said. And they then would have to work significantly more to make up for the lost subsidy.

"I think they'd be surprised to see how drastic it is," said Wu. "I'd be kind of shocked to see if I make $100 less (in total income each year), I get all these benefits, but if I make $100 more, I get nothing."

"You basically don't want to fall in that hole," said Wu, adding that he believed contractors and others with more control over their incomes would be apt to adjust their hours worked to avoid the subsidy cliff.

He also said that because of lower insurance premiums often offered to younger people, the effect will more likely be seen by older people. But "you will see it across all age groups" in the seven states including New York and Vermont where insurance premiums are either barred from being affected by age, or restricted from being dramatically affected, he said.

Under the ACA, federal subsidies in the form of tax credits to buy insurance on new state health insurance exchanges will be available to millions of people who can start enrolling on those exchanges Oct. 1. The subsidies are available to people or families whose incomes total 400 percent above the federal poverty level or less, and are designed to cap their insurance premiums at 9.5 percent of their total income.

For a single person, that FPL income maximum is $45,960 per year. The maximums are adjusted upward for couples and families until maxing out at $94,200 for a family of four.

(Read more: Doctors skeptical, confused about Obamacare)

Under a scenario that ValuePenguin.com identified, a couple in Ohio, both age 50, would be eligible for subsidies worth $3,452 to purchase a so-called silver insurance plan?a moderately priced level of benefits under the ACA's scheme?that costs $9,346 annually if they made up to $62,040 per year.

But if they made just $1 more than that, they would lose the subsidy. Wu noted that the couple then would have to earn at least $65,492 to make up for the lost subsidy.

In New York, a family of three whose annual income totals $78,120, would pay $12,784 for the second-lower-priced silver plan on that state's insurance exchange. After getting a $5,363 tax credit, the family's net cost for the insurance would be $7,421.

But if the family earned even slightly more than $78,120, they would have to pay the entire $12,784 for the insurance because they then wouldn't qualify for the subsidy.

To make up for that, the family's annual income would have to reach $83,483, Wu said.

The stark effect of peoples' age in determining their risk from the subsidy cliff is seen in two examples from Connecticut.

There, Wu said, a 27-year-old single man would pay $3,636 annually for the second-cheapest silver plan?less than the $4,366 cap on insurance premiums for individuals earning $45,960 or less annually. That person would not be eligible for subsidies, and thus would see no disincentive in working more hours.

But the annual premiums for a 50-year-old Connecticut couple buying that plan would be $12,468. If their combined incomes were $62,040 or less, they would receive $6,575 in subsidies to offset the cost.

However, if their income was more than that, they would lose the subsidies, leaving them out of pocket $6,575. They then would have to earn at least $68,615 to make up for that lost subsidy, Wu said.
