UVa board to consider reinstating president

(AP) ? The University of Virginia's Board of Visitors will consider reinstating President Teresa Sullivan at a meeting next week, even as the board's leader defends her actions in asking Sullivan to step down.

The board announced it would vote Tuesday on whether to retain Sullivan, whose resignation is effective Aug. 15. In the uproar over the ouster, 10 of the university's 11 school deans, as well as the Faculty Senate, have called for Sullivan's reinstatement. Other groups have condemned the board for its handling of the situation.

One board rector, Helen Dragas, elaborated on the reasoning behind Sullivan's ouster Thursday, saying Sullivan wasn't addressing financial pressures and other challenges quickly enough.

Dragas acknowledged the board could have handled the firing better, saying: "We did the right thing, the wrong way."
