In late January, I had a nice meeting with Marin Software CEO Chris Lien, and we chatted about Google's new product listing ads (PLAs), which form the backbone of Google Shopping.

Marin handles a lot of online advertising for various clients, such as Macy's, Gap and Fossil.

Separately, he also gave me this document, which describes the various ad prices and resulting performance on Google ads running separately on mobile devices, laptops, and tablets. The document describes search ad results from clients who spend $4 billion annually.

A few days later, on Feb. 6, Google changed its Adwords advertising interface in such a way that it prevented advertisers from running tablet-only ad campaigns. Google was accused of doing that to engineer a back-door price increase: Tablet ads are cheaper, some clients said, and perform better. To reach tablet users now, critics said, advertisers must also buy ads on laptops and those ads are more expensive.

(Google's defenders point out that the move was made to simplify the increasingly complicated universe of devices, and that laptops and desktops are indistinguishable in some cases.)

Marin's study, described in the document, shows some numbers that support Google's critics. Ads running on tablets are cheaper than those running on computers, and more effective, the document states:

Those ads will now become unavailable to advertisers.

Marin's representatives were reticent about the document after our talk. I also agreed to an embargo ? a waiting period through Feb. 12 ? in which I would not publish the info.

And then, on Feb. 13, Marin filed its S-1 papers to take the company public, a day after the embargo date.

The document doesn't say anything material about Marin's business, of course. Plenty of companies publish research on Google ad pricing. But Marin is one of Google's biggest single customers, handling billions in annual online spend across a variety of properties annually.

The company did not explain why it wanted the release of the document put on hold. Marin is now in its IPO "silent period." But it appears that the company successfully put some distance between the date of the Adwords change and some data that appears to fuel critics of its biggest trading partner.

Fox hires Scott Brown as contributor

NEW YORK (AP) ? Fox News Channel is hiring former Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown as a contributor, and the Republican is making his debut in prime time on Wednesday.

The network says Brown will offer commentary across several programs, starting with Sean Hannity on Wednesday. Brown lost his seat to Elizabeth Warren in November and declined to run in a special election to fill the Senate seat vacated by now-Secretary of State John Kerry.

Brown says he's looking forward to challenging elected officials to put the country's needs ahead of their partisan interests.

Fox has been remaking its contributor lineup in recent months, cutting ties to Sarah Palin and Dick Morris while hiring Brown and Dennis Kucinich.

Pope Benedict XVI resigned 'for the good of the church'

Benedict XVI has made his first public appearance since his shock announcement earlier this week that he will abdicate.

Addressing thousands of faithful in his weekly audience hall meeting in the Vatican this morning, the Pope said he was stepping down ?for the good of the church?.

As the 85-year-old German cleric walked into the chamber he received a standing ovation with many of those present bursting into tears. A huge banner reading ?Grazie Santita? (Thank you Your Holiness) was strung up at the back of the hall.

Although he looked frail and spoke in soft tones, the Pope was clearly overwhelmed with joy at the response he had received from the crowds. On Monday Benedict opted to announce his resignation in Latin, but for today?s weekly audience he switched to the more accessible Italian. But the message he gave was the same ? that old age and a lack of energy meant there was simply no point continuing in a job that he believes a younger successor could do more successfully.

?As you know, I have decided to renounce the ministry that the Lord gave to me on April 19, 2005,? he said, to applause. ?I did this in full liberty for the good of the church.?

Benedict?s resignation speech on Monday sent shockwaves around the world. No Pope has given up the papacy for the last 600 years. But Benedict had previously been on record that Pope?s who struggle to do their job should consider stepping down.

During his time in the Vatican, the then Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger witnessed first-hand the physical deterioration of his predecessor John Paul II and analysts say that experience helped forged his opinion that Pope?s should not carry on to the end if they cease to be able to do their jobs.

He will remain in the Vatican and his older brother George has insisted that Benedict will play no part in deciding his successor.

This morning?s audience was the start of a busy day for Benedict: he will also preside over Ash Wednesday services to mark the official start of the Catholic Church's Lenten season. The service is usually held in a church on Rome's Aventine hill, but was moved at the last minute to St Peter's Basilica to accommodate the crowds, although it will also spare the pope the usual procession to the church.

The Vatican insisted no serious medical ailment was behind Benedict's decision to retire, though it admitted for the first time yesterday that he has had a pacemaker for years and recently had it replaced.

The move sets the stage for a conclave by mid-March to elect a new pope. Benedict's final general audience will be held February 27.

PST: Henry advocates hard line against racism

Red Bulls striker Thierry Henry spoke up yesterday on recent incidents of racism. The Red Bulls star, made famous through his fabled days at Arsenal and on some wonderful versions of the French national team, says point deductions might be the only way to properly punish clubs and their fans.

He stopped short of saying leagues and governing bodies should definitely do so, but believes it should be considered, at least.

Obviously, I am not in charge of this type of decision. That?s the only way. Because you would find normally that fans do care about that. If you do take points away, that can be pretty massive [for teams] that want to win the title. I do think that can be something that can be done.?

When pressed on whether that is truly fair, considering that minority factions are frequently responsible for the ugly stuff, Henry pressed on.

It?s hard. But if I tell you that if you don?t behave well, your team might lose the game ? you might stop. I?m not saying you will stop, but you might stop. Because at the end of the day, we are all there for the team, for the club.?

Former U.S. Navy SEAL to be remembered at Texas service

ARLINGTON, Texas (Reuters) - Thousands of people are expected to gather at Cowboys Stadium on Monday to remember former U.S. Navy SEAL Chris Kyle, who was killed at a shooting range by an Iraq War veteran he tried to help.

Kyle, 38, was considered the deadliest sniper in American military history. He served four combat tours of duty in Iraq and elsewhere, and won two Silver Stars and five Bronze Stars for bravery, according to his book "American Sniper," about his military service from 1999 to 2009.

He was shot to death on February 2 at the shooting range at Rough Creek Lodge, an upscale retreat about 50 miles southwest of Fort Worth, Texas.

Monday afternoon's memorial service is being held at the home of the Dallas Cowboys, a stadium in Arlington, Texas that seats 80,000. A funeral procession is scheduled for Tuesday from the Dallas area to Austin, where he is to be buried.

Eddie Routh, 25, is charged with killing Kyle and his close friend and neighbor, Chad Littlefield, at the gun range and then fleeing in Kyle's pickup truck. Kyle and Littlefield took Routh to the shooting range to try to help him relax and deal with personal problems, police have said.

Routh was arrested near his home in the Dallas suburb of Lancaster hours after the shooting at the gun range. He is being held in the Erath County jail on $3 million bail.

After the shooting, Routh drove in Kyle's truck to his sister's home in Midlothian, the same suburb where Kyle and Littlefield lived, and confessed to shooting the two men. In a 911 call to Midlothian police, Routh's sister and her husband tell the dispatcher that Routh suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder and had recently been hospitalized in a mental hospital.

After leaving the Navy, Kyle founded Craft International, a company that provided combat and weapons training to military, police, corporate and civilian clients.

Kyle is the co-author of another book, "American Gun - A History of the U.S. in Ten Firearms," which is scheduled to be published in May.
